Skincare Tips for Men with Oily Skin

A common question we get from men is, “What are your skin care tips for men with oily skin?” A simple skincare routine with the right clean skincare products will help care for and minimize oily skin.

Below are some general skincare tips for men with oily skin.

Don’t over cleanse. It’s a common myth that if you have oily skin, you should wash your face more often.  Unfortunately, over cleansing may be causing your oily skin problem. When you wash your skin too often within a 24-hour cycle, you strip your skin of its natural oils.  This causes your skin to produce more oil in an attempt to hydrate and rebalance your skin, which is a natural reaction.

Use the right face wash for men.  If you use a harsh cleanser, like a bar soap, it will strip your skin of its natural oils, elevate its pH and cause your skin to produce more oil.  A gentle face wash is key for men with oily skin. Using a gentle pH face wash in the morning and night will cleanse the skin without stripping the skin of its natural oils, and help to balance your skin’s pH so it is ready to be hydrated with a daily moisturizer for men.

Do moisturize day and night. Another common myth is that men with oily skin do not need to moisturize.  Moisturizing after cleansing is key in replenishing, hydrating, and restoring your skin’s optimal balance.  For daytime, look for a daily moisturizer infused with antioxidants and SPF and for nighttime, look for a nourishing moisturizer to replenish and revitalize the skin. When your skin is hydrated daily, it will naturally produce less oil.  So, say goodbye to a shiny t-zone and the appearance of large pores!

Do exfoliate. Exfoliating with a scrub weekly is key in caring for oily skin.  It helps to slough off dead skin cells, allowing moisturizes to hydrate and absorb deeper into the skin.  Two times per week to start is recommended for men with oily skin.

Stay hydrated.  Oily skin can be the body’s response to dehydration and pH levels that are out of balance.  We cannot overstate that drinking enough water plays a large role in the look and feel of your skin.  Water is your body's principal chemical component and makes up about 50% to 70% of your body weight. Your skin and organs need water to hydrate and to detoxify the body. In general, you should try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day.  For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water a day.  Remember, excess coffee, tea, sugary foods and beverages will dehydrate the skin.

Putting your best face forward doesn’t have to be complicated. For men with oily skin, start with a simple skincare routine and slowly add to it as needed. Start with the holy grail: Invigorating daily face wash, face scrub and non-comedogenic daytime moisturizer with SPF and a replenish non-comedogenic antioxidant moisturizer.  Let your skin get use to the products (typically 3-4 weeks) then add new products like clay masks and hydrating masks to your oily skincare routine.
