HOW TO GROW A THICKER MUSTACHE

I live in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles and it is the hipster central of Southern California and thick mustaches of all sorts can be spotted frequently. I've always wanted a mustache that makes people stop in their tracks to look with envy.

But growing the perfect, nicely filled in, thick mustache requires a lot more work than simply not shaving for a long time. It is a process and you need to take care of your facial hair and skin while growing it out.

Causes of a Patchy Mustache

Unfortunately and for various reasons some may be faced with the reality of a patchy mustache. There are four key reasons for patchy facial hair

  • Alopecia - Immunity disease which causes the hair follicles to cease developing
  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Poor diets that lack nutrients, vitamins and protein

As far as age and genetics, there’s not much you can do to control that. For some men, growing a thick mustache is easier than for others. But everyone should follow these steps for getting fuller bristles.

How to Grow a Thicker Mustache

Give these tips below a try.  There's no 100% proven way for everyone and it is a bit of trial and error but the road maps is laid out below.

Let It Grow

Let's dispel the a common myth.  Shaving doesn’t make facial hair grow thicker. Quite frankly, it has no impact on how thick your facial hair grows. If you want to grow a thick mustache, you simply have to let it grow. It gets unwieldy after a certain length of time, but you can give it a slight trim to give it a more groomed look and shape. Just don't trim it too much otherwise it will take longer to reach the desired thickness and fullness you're after.

Use Mustache Wax

As you let your mustache grows, your thicker mustache might get so big that it gets into your mouth.  Use mustache wax to tame the mustache and veer it off to the side and away from your mouth and trim those ones that are just too long or out of place. If your mustache doesn’t cause you any problems, you’re less likely to shave the thing off in a fit of rage.

Healthy Nutrient Rich and Protein Dense Diet

Facial hair needs the right nutrients, more specifically, protein to thrive. You should make sure you’re consuming a nutrient dense and protein rich diet as well as the recommended daily dose of calories for someone in your age, height, and weight.

You also want to ensure you’re getting enough of the right vitamins that support hair growth. These include Vitamins A, D, E, and K2. You also want sufficient copper, magnesium, iodine, zinc, and selenium.

Use a Beard Roller

These are essentially derma rollers with medical grade titanium needles that some men swear by to stimulate the hair follicles. The roller is slightly punctures tiny needle point holes in the top layers of the skin causing damage. The damage signals the skin to produce collagen to repair it and the collagen also stimulates your mustache to grow faster and thicker.

Gently roll the beard roller over the mustache and beard area a few times a week before bed.  A word of caution is that you should avoid beard rollers if you're prone to beard acne. It could worsen the condition and spread the beard acne bacteria.

Give Different Mustache Styles a Go

As your mustache is growing out and filling out, with your handy-dandy mustache wax, you can try styling your facial hair in a different styles.  Its interesting as there is a whole sub-culture of men with very interesting mustache styles and shapes. It will give you a chance to explore the style and shape that best suits your personality, face shape and the look you're after.  It can even give you an idea of what you’re striving for and why you should continue allowing the hair to grow out.

Minoxidil Can Help

Minoxidil is an over-the-counter hair loss medication that’s designed to help men grow hair on their scalps. However, it may have advantages when it comes to facial hair. For the past couple of decades men have been using Minoxidil off label for their facial hairs.  I got caught up in a Reddit thread where hundreds of men were giving testimonials of the effectiveness of minoxidil for their facial hair as well as the hairs on their scalp.

You should consult with your doctor before using minoxidil to grow a fuller beard or mustache. It does come with side effects, so you want to know those possible side effects, consider it before going all in.

Use Beard Oil

Beard oil works just as well on your mustache area. It softens and strengthens the hairs, and some of them even provide essential nutrients.  It also leaves your mustache smelling great, which is good and greatly appreciated by your romantic "other".
